The Design Futures Initiative

We’re building a global community to design better tomorrows.

The DFI is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, CA that produces the PRIMER conferences in the U.S. and Europe. Entirely volunteer-driven, the organization has grown from 6 chapters in 2018 to 40+ chapters today.

PRIMER Conferences

Responding to a growing global interest, PRIMER also is held annually outside the United States. Our first international conference, PRIMER EU, was held in Helsinki, Finland in 2018 and Madrid, Spain in 2019.  Interested in hosting PRIMER in your city? We are now accepting applications for PRIMER EU 2020.

Speculative Futures

We have an international community of Speculative Futures chapters that focus on the work and practice of Speculative and Critical Design, Design Fiction, Futurism, and Strategic Foresight. Our events host speakers and workshops and partner with organizations to grow and train their communities in Futures practice.
