<image:caption>Co-Founder and Semiotician, Axis Mundi Rosamund is a writer and researcher, applying critical theory, human sciences and design to build cultural strategies for commercial and social enterprise. Driven by a deep interest in mainstream culture and social sign-systems, in early 2018 Rosamund co-founded Axis Mundi, a specialist brand studio using semiotics to bridge the gap between research and creative execution. Axis Mundi study communication, experiences and aesthetics to reveal how culture shapes the ways we think, feel, behave and believe. Frequently collaborating with anthropologists, critical theorists and design partners, Rosamund has conducted complex multi-market semiotic studies for major global brands including P&G, QIC GRE, Molson Coors, Mattel, and Duracell and participated in cultural fieldwork around the world, for example, researching alternative approaches to preventative health in India, retail futures in Australia, emergent narratives of artificial intelligence in China and the cultural framing of masculine success in South Africa. Rosamund has written about visual culture, media and spatial design for a range of publications, including TANK, FRAME and LSN Global. Rosamund is a firm believer in combining critical thinking with creative imagination to provoke and challenge conventional wisdom.</image:caption>

<image:title>Why Pasifika Futurism Matters - Gregory Loui</image:title>
<image:caption>Researcher, Indigenous Futures Lab I am a Speculative Designer, artist, avid reader, geek, martial artist and an aspiring Speculative Fiction writer of diverse but grounded stories. Above all, I am a creator. Raised in Hawaii as a child of multiple heritages, I was always exposed to a multitude of cultures from Chinese to Japanese to Hawaiian. As a kid, I would always be reading in the library, starting my journey into the world of speculative fiction with the Redwall series by Brain Jacques and NOVA on PBS. To this end, I became a Speculative Design Major at UCSD, one of the first students to enroll in the new major. I knew it was the major to me because it combined both scientific inquiry and art, creating a major that envisions the future through research and artistic creativity. I’ve taken courses in Speculative Design and passed with flying colors through my work in imagining futures for underrepresented populations. I’ve also joined DFA, Design for America, a club formed by Don Norman to create human-centered design solutions for social problems. We’ve worked on a project to help refugee education inequality in the San Diego area and have won an award from UCSD for our proof of concept. I’ve interned for the UCSD Cross-Border Initiative, helping run an out-door learning environment as well as filming a documentary in a underserved neighborhood of San Diego. Now, I work at the Fox Lab and Indigenous Futures Lab at UCSD. My primary career path is as a Speculative Designer, finding a job in a lab or Think Tank to create new-paradigm shifting devices that challenge conventional thoughts on technology. If I can change a single life, then I will know I’ve taken my first step. As a secondary career goal, I also want to make a living from my fiction novels if possible. I love writing stories too much to give up, so getting paid for my craft would be great.</image:caption>

<image:title>SystemViz for the Future-Maker: The New Jeito, Judo, and Jagaad of Change - Peter Stoyko</image:title>
<image:caption>Chief Social Scientist & Information Designer, Elanica Peter Stoyko is an interdisciplinary social science researcher and information designer working for Elanica, a consultancy with a global remit that specializes in service design and governance. Peter has 27 years of experience as a researcher, with 21 of those years spent conducting dialogue-based action research. (Action research involves those most affected by a challenge within the research process.) His work started within the civil service academies of several countries (Canada, South Africa, and Brazil). This has spread to consultancy work in the public, non-profit, and academic sectors. Much of this work involves developing new dialogue and visualization techniques to help diverse groups grapple with complex challenges. Peter also has 17 years experience as an information designer. This work is about orchestrating words and visuals (and sometimes motion) to explain complicated ideas. Examples include information graphics, motion graphics, e-learning modules, and dialogue tools. <image:title>Designing Futures in a changing world, or how artists can break the norm - Justine De Ridder</image:title>
<image:caption>Strategy and Innovation Designer, NonZeroSumLab As an avid dreamer, Justine always sought for ways to make her dreams come true. First through engineering, life sciences and computer sciences, then through the arts. When she became acquainted with future-based design, she realized that being a rigorous dreamer was key in solving challenges and shaping (real) innovation. Ever since, she has been exploring ways of re-shaping environments and methodologies to allow people to envision new futures, understand what they entail for society, and believe in making the steps to realize these futures. In short, she wants everybody to start dreaming again, and to wonder: what if? Currently, Justine works at Quint Wellington Redwood, an international consultancy company supporting organizations in designing and implementing digital transformation. Together with visual storyteller and fellow futures-enthusiast Liudmila Sharafutdinova, they are working on developing ways to shape a digital vision through future-based design. In their ongoing research, they are merging their personal strengths in organizational culture and innovation through foresight to develop a methodology bridging the future with the now. As a designer/engineer/artist, Justine likes to consider herself as a Swiss army knife, able to bring the necessary tools to the table to drive new ways of thinking and to initiate perspective shifts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Designing Futures in a changing world, or how artists can break the norm - Liudmila Sharafutdinova</image:title>
<image:caption>Strategy and Innovation Designer, NonZeroSumLab Liudmila Sharafutdinova is a visual storyteller and a linguist of change passionate about futures and speculative design. She was born in Russia and moved to the Netherlands with the aim to study arts. Soon enough she realized that she is more of a designer than a painter and over traditional art, she preferred solving complex problems using design as a method and a language of change. Passionated graphic designer and illustrator, Liuda worked for small and big organisations as a communication and visual designer. Inspired by what future-based design can bring, and with a dire need to create change, she started working at PVH Europe (the American clothing company owning brands such as Tommy Hilfiger or Calvin Klein) where she merged artistic design practices of transmedia storytelling and agile methodology to drive change in the organizational culture. She currently works at Quint Wellington Redwood, an international consultancy company supporting organizations in designing and implementing digital transformation. Together with Justine De Ridder they are researching the current models of innovation and are working on establishing a new methodology aimed at bridging the Future with the Now. Liuda believes in the power of combining the “uncombinable” by bringing interdisciplinary solutions and eliminating the boundaries between corporate and artistic worlds.</image:caption>

Anthropological in her approach, Agnes roots her work in people's narratives to build products with intentional outcomes. She finds herself always coming back to the question, "what behavior is being incentivized here?" Agnes will always be a fierce advocate for data ethics, technical literacy and elevating human dignity above short term profit. She is currently a product manager at Planet, where she is working on making daily images of the Earth easily accessible and valuable online, to anyone who wants them (especially outside of the geospatial niche). She has also advised start-ups and Fortune 500 companies on how to build new products and services (often in industries that don’t quite exist yet) as a strategist at both frog design and Accenture. Her writing and work has been featured in MIT Tech Review, Business Insider, UX Collective, SXSW, International Development Design Summit, and Wesbeth Arts Center.</image:caption>

<image:title>Designing Multi-Partner Transformations... - Anthony D Paul</image:title>
<image:caption>Our team explores the speculative future state of transportation and shipping, to preserve our veteran workforce, enable our network planners, and give new value to the end customers who ship goods or otherwise participate. We democratically explore concepts, then create actionable roadmaps for individual contributors to build symbiotic, polytopian futures together. We're designers, behavioral scientists, economists, doomsday preppers, and sci-fi geeks—but most importantly, we're dreamers with a knack for creating reality. I've been at GE Transportation (now part of the Wabtec family of companies) for 3.5 years, with former tours through agencies across sectors including products for Silicon Valley, citizen-facing federal government, and national defense. I'm a seasoned, international speaker on topics ranging from inclusive design to creative team management, technical tool how-tos, and more. I've volunteered at, organized, and otherwise supported innumerable meetup groups and conferences in half a dozen states. Today, I apply what I've learned from my peers, mentors, and impacted communities to bridge the gap between organizational product strategy (meeting goals and requirements by constituencies) and the people you and we serve in our functions, via the products we envision, manifest, and release—to every day strive for the relationship between business and environment to be healthful and sustainable. At times it feels like an insurmountable personal mission, but my exerted effort is unwavering.</image:caption>
